Will the EVAP monitor eventually become ready? Is there any reason for it to never become ready? The car is a 2012 535i xDrive with 68,700 miles, and two previous owners with complete maintenance records. Luckily I don't need to get an emissions/smog text done, and in my state you can get it tested with 1 incomplete monitor so I'm not worried, but for my own sanity and peace of mind I want everything to be 100% okay with this car. I've kept the gas tank between 1/4-3/4 full and I still cannot get the EVAP monitor to be ready. I have driven the car for 300+ miles now and have done the BMW drive cycle every night since 9/4/20 when I bought the car. Still no codes, and the car is 100% stock with no tune. It takes many drive cycles to get the evap to be ready. Every other monitor needs to be complete. About 6-8 month later I noticed my SAI monitor was now going to Complete. Youre allowed under the EPA to have evap monitor incomplete. One monitor can be in incomplete state to pass in NJ. I went straight to inspection from the shop and I passed inspection. The Evap monitor now completed but SAI still did not. I drove the car and did the BMW drive cycle and all the monitors were ready except one: EVAP. They diagnosed as an Evap issue, due to history of P0442. I wasn't too worried since it was from a reputable dealership so I didn't suspect any foul play with the monitors having been cleared before purchase by the dealer. No codes and a few monitors were not ready. When I got home, I plugged in my scanner and scanned the car. The vehicle has to sit overnight for at least 8 hours. Temperature between 30 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The EVAP test needs the following The fuel tank needs to be between 1/4 and 3/4 during all times of the drive cycle. Recapping: The State Of California will give a pass on a smog check to any OBD vehicle with an incomplete evap monitor. Didn't know at the time, or I'd have done it that day. So, I could have smogged it right after the secondary air system passed its monitor. I didn't have my OBD scanner when I went to buy the car (I know, major fault on my part), but the car drove well on the test drive and everything checked out upon visual inspection, plus this car was sitting at a reputable Audi dealership in my city. The gas cap seals off the filler neck of the gas tank from the outside atmoshpere. The EVAP system takes the longest, however, you are allowed 1 Subsystem to not be ready and still pass an emmisions test. The car he has owned for years (A Chevy) still has an incomplete evap monitor. This past weekend I traded in my E92 LCI for a N55 F10 pre-LCI.
